PETCHEY KEEP A COOL HEAD DURING PENALTIES!!!

Last night Petchey’s younger maestros entertained Longdean School in the under 12’s English schools cup at Hackney Marshes. With both teams ready for a 2pm kick off, the away team started the game with the first chance as their right midfielder beat the off side trap only shoot wide from 6 yards. After a nervy start Petchey quickly picked themselves up and started having some chances of their own. It wasn’t until the 15th minute when the deadlock was broken as some slack defending from Petchey allowed Longdean to collect a loose a ball on the edge of Petchey's penalty area before sending in a delightful back post cross that their number 10 powered home after getting the better of Adam Linard-Stevens at left back. 7 minutes later Petchey found themselves 2 down as another display of poor defending allowed Longdean to score cheaply from a corner. Petchey grew in confidence as the half went on and quickly snatched a goal back through Rashayne Hunter as Louis Thompson put him through with a delightful pass. In the closing seconds of the half once more Petchey proved to have learnt nothing as another clanger in the defence allowed Longdean to score again from a corner.

The second half started brightly for Petchey as captain Thompson started to produce excellent distribution to other team mates which inspired and lifted the team. Thompson was coming more and more into the game and was unlucky on two occasions not to get his name on the score sheet. He firstly sent a curling shot just over while his deflected left-footed effort floated into Longdean’s keeper’s arms. Thompson and Petchey finally made their dominance pay when they moved in front with what proved the match’s turning point 3 – 2. With 12 minutes to play Petchey completed a dramatic come back as a Thompson corner bubbled in the goal mouth before being smashed home by Hunter who made the score 3 – 3 and sent the game into extra time.

No goals were scored during extra time which took the game to penalties.

Petchey win 3 – 2 on penalties.

Earlier on in the week our year 8 team beat Northbrook school 7 – 0, Mahmoud Sanni-Oba scored a hat-trick.

Our under 13’s girls won away as they knocked Cavendish School for six with a 6 – 0.

Our Year 9 out Played Mossbourne all over the Pitch but unfortunately didn’t get the win as they lost 1 – 0.

ASDAN London City Airport Visit

Petchey students got a taste of the working world when they visited two different venues to learn about the world of work.

Five students visited London City Airport and Canary Wharf in June as part of their studies to gain the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness. After being taken on a tour round the airport, students had the opportunity to interview a community relations worker, two members of cabin crew and an aviation police officer.

The students really pushed themselves to conduct professional interviews and find out key information about the jobs these people did.

They were then treated to a whistle stop tour of financial district of Canary Wharf, given by a member of staff who had come from the same street as one of the students! They learned about the opportunities which were available to them if they expand their horizons and were inspired to aim higher in their ambitions for the future.

After collecting goody bags and enjoying lunch in the sunshine of Canary Wharf’s Jubilee park, the students arrived back in time for afternoon lessons. Their behaviour and effort was excellent and we hope the group will complete lots of similar trips over the coming year of their studies, to benefit from the experience of the wider world outside the Academy.

Bank of England Museum Trip

As a result of their hard work, motivation and effort shown over the course of the year 30 year 7 students were chosen to attend a trip to the Bank of England Museum. They watched a presentation about a young girl starting her own business and how that works, were shown sheets of real money, lifted up a bar of real gold and then they were challenged to look at the exhibits and complete the activity sheets with prizes for the winners. They all really enjoyed themselves and learnt about how the Bank works and various other economic principles.

Zhane who is in Yr 9 is studying GCSE Catering as an option , had only ninety minutes to prepare a 2-course meal to impress the judging panel, who included Brian Turner, Lesley Waters, Theo Randall and Michael Caines to take third palce.

Her menu of Loin of Lamb cooked “en papillote”, fondant potato, creamed savoy cabbage, red wine mushroom jus, followed by Orange Syllabub with Dark Chocolate, caramelised orange impressed the judges.

.

Celebrity Chef Lesley Waters, one of the judging panel, said “It was so wonderful to see the quality of skills and the way in which they were applied"

Over 7,000 children aged 12-16 competed in local and regional heats to reach the FutureChef national final. 12 talented young cooks  from across the UK competed in the final

Future Chef 2008
Shaquel Grant came a creditable second place when he competed against nine other London schools in the prostigious Future Chef 2008 competition held at Thames Valley University on Friday 8th February.

His main course, 'supreme of salmon poached in red wine with glazed salsify shallots and horseradish mash' brought much admiration from the audience who thought that it could be the winner.

Judges stressed that he had run a "very close second" as his pudding, 'rhubarb syllabub with a coconut tuile' was voted the best in the competition. Shaquel certainly acquitted himself well as he was competing against students in years 10 & 11.

The Head Chef at The Berkeley was so impressed with Shaquel's skill and professionalism that he offered him a work placement at his hotel (as long as he gave away his pudding recipe!).

Shaquel had been taught by Mr Liversidge (Petchey Academy Food Manager) and mentored by John Woodward (Head Chef at the Malmaison) and assisted by one of Mr Liversidge's ex-students, Sang Nguyen, who is currently working for Gordon Ramsey.

Shaquel not only received the prize of a set of chef's knives but a dinner at the soon to be opened Franklin Hotel. Shaquel would, he says, like to go on to be a Chef when he leaves the Petchey Academy. He has time now to develop his skill as The Academy has a fully equipped catering kitchen and restaurant.
