Specialising in Health, Care and Medical Sciences

Overview

In Human Spirit students study History, Geography, Religious Studies and Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education across six curriculum themes. In Year 7 our themes are Healthy Lifestyle, Why am I Special, My Community, British Climate, Women under the Microscope, Natural Disasters and Under the Stars. In Year 8 our themes are Healthy Lifestyle, Why am I still Special, Inventions, Work in the 21st Century, War and Peace and Coursework.

In History students show their understanding by making connections between events and changes in the different periods and areas studied, and by comparing the structure of societies and economic, cultural and political developments. Students also enhance their historical skills by evaluating and using various sources of information to complement and inform their enquiry into many historical mysteries. Students also boost their self confidence by preparing and being involved in historical re-enactments.

In Geography students learn about geographical patterns and processes and how political, economic, social and environmental factors affect contemporary geographical issues. Students also learn about how places and environments are interdependent. They carry out geographical enquiry inside and outside the classroom and use a wide range of geographical skills and resources such as maps, satellite images and ICT.

In RS students deepen their understanding of important beliefs, concepts and issues of truth and authority within the six world religions. They apply their understanding of religious and philosophical beliefs, teachings and practices to a range of ultimate questions and ethical issues, with a focus on self-awareness, relationships, rights and responsibilities.

In PSHCE students learn how to plan and manage choices for their courses and career. They also understand and continue to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, coping well with their changing bodies and feelings. They also learn to cope with changing relationships and understand how these can affect their health and well-being. Many students make the most of new opportunities and take part in the life of the Academy and its communities.
