The key subject aims are to enable students to develop:

  • An understanding of Arabic in a variety of context

  • Knowledge of Arabic vocabulary and structures

  • Transferable language learning skills

  • The ability to communicate effectively in Arabic

  • Awareness and understanding of countries and communities where Arabic is spoken

 

Year 7

Semester 1 & 2

In semesters 1 and 2, students take part in a languages carousel during which they are given a 3 week taster of French in addition to Mandarin, Arabic and Latin.After Christmas, they are assigned one language which they retain for the remainder of Year 7.

Semester 3

Students learn to communicate in Arabic and learn basic greetings. They learn about family members and will be able to give a basic description of family members in the language.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Introduce immediate family members
  • Simple descriptions
  • Describing character
  • Pets
Semester 4

During this semester the students will focus on food. They will express opinions on food and will be able to order food at a restaurant.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Food and drink
  • Asking for food and drink at a restaurant
  • Expressing opinions about food and drink
  • Describing food and drink
  • Likes and dislikes
Semester 5

Students learn to talk about their school life and express their opinions on different school subjects.

They will cover the following topics;

  • Talk about school subjects
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Give opinions about school and school subjects
  • Justify opinions by giving reasons
  • Talk about school timetable
  • Stationery
Semester 6

Students develop all their language skills by performing a short role play and writing a short character essay which incorporates their full personal description including name, age, birthday, family and hobbies.

Year 8

Semester 1

Students will focus on speaking in Arabic. They will learn to express themselves and gain confidence.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Talking about yourself
  • Asking others
  • Talking about nationality
  • Greetings
  • Make longer sentences by using adjectives and connectives.
 
Semester 2

In this semester students will learn how to write and speak about where they live.They will attempt to extend their writing by adding reasons and opinions.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Talk about your house; Mention what rooms, describe the rooms, your best and worst rooms.
  • What you have in your local are.
  • Basic directions to local amenities.
  • Talking about dates: numbers, days and months
  • Colours
 
Semester 3

Students will learn how to describe the clothing they wear both in school and during weekends.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Talking about clothes
  • Traditional and Western clothing
  • Describing the outfit
  • At the clothes shop
Semester 4

Students learn about their school life. They will learn to talk about their school routine.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Talk about school subjects
  • Give opinions about school and school subjects
  • Talk about school timetable
  • Stationery
Semester 5

During this semester the students will focus on food. They will express opinions on food and will be able to order food at a restaurant.

The following topics will be covered;

  • Food and drink
  • Asking for food and drink at a restaurant
  • Expressing opinions about food and drink
  • Describing food and drink
  • Likes and dislikes
Semester 6

Students participate in the whole-school ‘Under the Stars’ exhibition event, whereby they develop their understanding of a set text in the target language and create their own interpretation of this story.

Further to this, there is an educational visit to British Museum. Students will discover the part religious belief has played in Islamic design. By focusing closely on objects in the gallery, students will explore the creative influences on artists in the context of Islamic life and history.
