In 2018 The Petchey Academy was awarded awarded the national quality award for our careers education, information, advice and guidance provision.

Daily seminar time in small groups means that the Academic Tutors are able to take a personal interest in helping students to achieve their goals and aspirations. Every student receives Personal Statement mentoring through our weekly Future Prep sessions to support their university application and CV writing skills, and we provide tailored interview training and preparation for medical and Oxbridge interviews.

Year 12 Work Experience

Each year every Year 12 students will undertake 2 weeks of work experience, tailored
to their preferences. This is organised by a company called Inspire! who source the
placements. However, it is recommended that students research their own placements in order to get the best and most relevant opportunities.

1:1 Careers Guidance

Our dedicated Careers Coordinator is always available for appointments throughout the year,  however all Year 12 students attend compulsory 1:1 meetings each year to discuss their future plans as well as 1:1 interviews early in Year 13 to discuss university applications, personal statements and/or alternative plans , work experience, UCAS applications or post Sixth Form plans.

Discussions during seminar will often be centred around what each student can do during the year to make themselves more attractive to potential employers. This will often include a round up of the latest internship/apprenticeship opportunities, events, trips and placements on offer in the local area.

Applying for the Career Ready programme has to be one of the best decisions I made during Year 12. Whilst on the programme I was fortunate to be mentored by a Lawyer at Clifford Chance. Through my mentor and through career sessions on the programme I was given such an invaluable insight into the corporate sector and the soft skills I needed to develop during school. to the University of Cambridge where I was awarded a full scholarship. In 2016 and 2017 through the help of my Career Ready mentor and my school I successfully applied to Deloitte's ASPIRE programme and Accenture's Horizons Gap Year Scheme. Additionally, my mentor gave me extra support with my UCAS application for university through providing me feedback on my personal statement, my mentor was a key driving factor that gave me the confidence to apply to the University of Cambridge where I was awarded a full scholarship.  I am currently the Social Mobility Foundation Campus Ambassador at Cambridge and I am very passionate about increasing access and diversity to top universities.
