Semester 1 & 2
In semesters 1 and 2, students take part in a languages carousel during which they are given a 3 week taster of French in addition to Mandarin, Arabic and Latin.After Christmas, they are assigned one language which they retain for the remainder of Year 7.
Students learn about the art and history of Chinese writing. They are able to write a short introduction about themselves in Chinese characters.
Students learn the importance of family traditions in China and are able to describe their own and other people’s families.
Students learn to talk about their hobbies and express their opinions on different activities.
Students develop all their language skills by performing a short role play and writing a short character essay which incorporates their full personal description including name, age, birthday, family and hobbies.
Students learn about Chinese art and music by designing their own Chinese Opera masks;learning how to describe colours and personalities in the process.
Students develop an understanding of Chinese cuisine, and perform a restaurant role-play describing food, drink, costs and basic transactional language.
Students learn about Chinese mythology and design their own Chinese dragons; learning how to describe body parts and abilities in the process.
Students learn about the weather and how to describe different time periods/phrases.They will be assessed on their ability to describe the weather by performing aChinese weather forecast.
Students begin to develop their understanding of a wider variety of grammatical structures and tenses against the revision of sports vocabulary. Students will be able to describe their daily school routine.
Students participate in the whole-school ‘Under the Stars’ exhibition event, whereby they develop their understanding of a set text (Journey To The West) in the target language and create their own interpretation of this story.
Furtherto this, there is an educational visit to China Town and numerous specialisedChinese art teachers who will work with the students throughout the course ofthe year to allow students to be able to develop their conversational languageand cultural awareness in more authentic settings.
