Key Stage 3

Science in Year 7 & 8 will provide a foundation for the students at The Petchey Academy to understand the world around them through the teaching of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. This foundation of key knowledge and concepts aims to encourage our students to recognise the power and importance of rational explanation and develop their excitement and critical curiosity about the world around us. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse the causes.

Key Stage 4

As a Medical Science specialist scademy we offer a wide range of science qualifications. We offer OCR Gateway Science in the following: Separate Sciences: GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics; Double Science: Core Science, Additional Science and Entry Level Science.

The OCR Gateway Science suite emphasises explanations, theories and modelling in science along with the implications of science for society. Strong emphasis is placed on the active involvement of candidates in the learning process and each specification encourages a wide range of teaching and learning activities. Students wishing to opt for the separate sciences will normally be required to have achieved a Level 6 or above in their science KS3.

Key Stage 5

In Year 12 & 13 students are able to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The aim of the Biology A-level specification is to ensure that students continue to develop their interest in and enthusiasm for biology, including developing an interest in further study and careers in biology. A Level Chemistry promotes a meaningful understanding of concepts learnt at GCSE. Explanations of why chemical entities behave in such a way during chemical reactions. Moreover mathematical aspects of fundamental ideas are learnt at this level to better understand how atoms and molecules influence the order of the universe and an explanation to how science works. A Level Physics is a well rounded course that develops a passion for the subject as well as the theory and skills to progress into further education. Students who follow this program will tend to follow onto university courses in physics, engineering, one of the other sciences or related subjects, or to enter employment where a knowledge of physics would be useful.
