Yesterday we were lucky enough to have Sonia Leong come into the academy and provide workshops for our students. She also gave a particularly engaging presentation to our Year 9 students. In the presentation she explained her background and her journey to become a Manga artist. She studied marketing and worked as an artist on a freelance basis. It was great for the students to hear how a hobby or passion can become a career with the right level of dedication. Sonia was self-taught which was excellent given the fact she was providing workshops for our students, if she could be self-taught then so could they.
Sonia described the work she has completed which varied from graphic versions of Romeo and Juliet as part of her Manga Shakespeare series, all the way to work she has done for Doctor Who and the television series.
The workshops ran throughout the day, our Year 9s were particularly excited as they had a particular desire and passion to learn Manga style drawings. We even had to turn some students away as the demand was so high. Sonia taught complete skills and a crash course on everything you needed to know on how to start Manga style drawings and even went into the finer details of the pragmatics of a comic book.
Sonia was kind enough to donate some of her work to the school which our Art department will be putting up just in time for our Open Evening along with some of our students work. She will be appearing at the London Comic Con at the Excel, Many of our students have already been discussing buying tickets. We may even have some future Manga artists among us.
