Our Year 10 Sports Leaders graduated this week after 10 weeks in our Leadership Academy.
The Leadership Academy is a Big Lottery funded academy initiative aimed at developing confidence, communication and employability skills, whilst also offering enrichment opportunities for local primary school children. The Leadership Academy also facilitates pathways in to sports related careers and extra-curricular activities.
Each week, the sports leaders work on leadership & citizenship skills and then lead a fun sports club for children aged 5-8 years. This is the perfect opportunity to put their skills into practice as well as being positive role models for young children.
The Sports Leaders progress to completely running the club themselves by the end of the term and then ‘graduate’ in a special ceremony. They then undertake school and community volunteering opportunities to continue to develop their leadership skills. The Leadership Academy helps young people on a pathway to become volunteers of the future, with possible career routes into sports coaching and teaching. The graduates develop confidence, communication and citizenship skills whilst also being a positive role model.
The most recent cohort have been inspired to pursue coaching as a career and two of the students have been awarded Sports Ambassador for their professionalism, dedication and confidence demonstrated from week 1 to week 10.
This programme has made me respect teachers more as I am now aware of how hard it is to teach students!
