The Your Future, Your Ambition (YFYA) STEM trip, held at the Emirates Stadium was really well received by the students.
Ms Gilkes was really proud to receive so many positive comments from company directors, mentors and chaperones about the conduct and enthusiasm exhibited by the 20 specially selected students that attended.
Students were resilient during what was a very long day! This included an amazing talk from the Royal Armed Forces, a special session by the mentors from justpush.org, careers advice and some really challenging activities from Cambridge University. The plethora of goodies were well earned and all 4 members of staff that accompanied were impressed with the commitment shown by our students.
Some of our Year 9 students had this to say;
‘What I enjoyed is there were activities and I could even sign up for work experience for year 10. Another thing I enjoyed is that there was a large variety of things to choose from.’
‘The trip was a great experience because it showed all the job varieties and showed how simple subjects like Maths, English and Science can lead you into so many work placements. What went well was that I learnt about a new app called linked in which can help you apply for so many jobs just by sitting at home. It’s a very useful app. Another thing I have learnt is that university is not the only option. There are so many people who can’t afford it, so in their case an apprenticeship is useful.’
YFYA was awarded the Points of Light award yesterday, from Teresa May for “the work done to educate, encourage and inspire the next generation to pursue STEM as a future career” It’s exciting for the students to be part of such an achievement!
