Magazine

The school magazine is part of the enhanced Wednesday curriculum at The Petchey Academy.  It is a student-initiated project from start to finish.  Students choose their roles, ranging from reporter to editor-in-chief to layout designer.  Part of the process involves brainstorming different types of articles and selecting what they would like to write about in The Petchey Magazine.  This year students will be writing articles reporting on Petchey sports, academics, teachers, technology and nearby healthy-living restaurants.  Not only will students be completing the articles, they are also responsible for publishing the magazine.  Outside educators will come in to explain the different methods of technology (In Design, Adobe Dreammaker, Microsoft Publisher) used to create an online magazine.  The final editions will come out every other semester and will be available on the Petchey website.

Slam-poetry workshops

Poetry – whether it is in free verse form or rap / hip-hop - needs to be honest. Through Slam poetry workshops, the academy has been encouraging young poets to write what they know about, understand and have a passion to communicate. Students at the Pethcy Acadmey were given opportunities to experience slam poetry in school and with a live performance/slam poet Joelle Taylor.
