Physical Education

Petchey Academy Physical Education Department actively supports and contributes to the Academy's overall philosophy.

The teaching of physical education is concerned with enabling every student to become independently active, to provide them with the background, skills and motivation to opt into physical activity as a lifestyle habit. This involves a progression from being teacher - dependent for participation and organisation to assuming responsibility for planning, carrying out and reviewing their own programmes of activity. This would be according to interest and opportunity both within the school and within the local community.

The department also believes that physical education contributes to the totality of a physical educational experience, extending beyond the physical to include personal, social and emotional elements. Movement can give pleasure and satisfaction, is a means of expression and communication, and it involves the mind and senses to a high degree. It is a distinct yet integral part of the educational process.

Aims of the Department

In the PE department we endeavour to create an environment in which every student can achieve their full potential, developing not only their skills and awareness of a specific activity, but also their communication skills and self-esteem.

We are proud of the programme we offer and of the achievement of our students.

We aim to:

  • Encourage students to participate to their maximum in their lessons.
  • Create an awareness of health and fitness, both within and outside of school.
  • Promote an active lifestyle.
  • Encourage social interaction in an out of school context.
  • Provide information about a range of activities.
  • Enable students to take responsibility for their own planning and organisational skills.
  • Provide a safe and stimulating learning environment.
  • Develop students’ knowledge and understanding in all activity areas.
  • Enable students to identify and target their strengths and limitations.
  • To provide a wide range of extra curricular activities, for both gifted and talented students and those less able.
  • Provide out of hours learning activities.

Special Needs

All pupils are entitled to a physical education programme as part of the National Curriculum. Whenever possible pupils with special needs should follow a physical education programme alongside all other pupils. Integration is paramount, avoiding demeaning tasks away from the majority of the group. If within physical education a pupil has a severe SEN, the department will seek a partnership with parents, support specialists and staff, to offer as much help and guidance as possible.
