INFORMATION FOR THE START OF TERM SEPTEMBER 2008

Version 5.  Thursday 30th  July 2008 at 09.00 hrs

(Please check this page regularly in case changes are made at short notice)

Dear Parents/Carers,
As we have now very successfully concluded the second year of The Petchey Academy, I would like to thank you for the support you have given to your son/daughter and The Petchey Academy during the last year(s). Setting up a new academy and establishing its ethos is not an easy task and without doubt would not be possible without your help. In September, we will be joined by the Third Cohort of students, which will approximately mark the halfway point for the academy as we develop into full capacity, which will be 1250 students once the Sixth Form is opened.

The Sixth Form will provide a full range of academic courses leading to, we hope, University entrance  for many of our students. For students who prefer a more vocationally based experience, preparations are underway to provide a range of courses to ensure that good career opportunities are available to all. It is planned to introduce limited sixth form provision from September 2008 focusing on our specialisms of medical science, health and social care. We are embarking on discussions with medical colleges and other university providers to examine the provision of ‘Master Classes’ to assist Hackney students to gain entry into Medical Colleges and other related health and social care university degree and professional courses.

Likewise, we hope to open up our ‘state of the art’ Training Kitchen and Restaurant (known as The Mulberry Restaurant) for Sixth Form courses in catering and hospitality. The Sixth Form when full will cater for 300 students, of which we anticipate the majority will continue to university and colleges of Further and Higher Education. Do remember Jack Petchey’s own personal motto, which we have adopted at The Petchey Academy…

If I think I can ...... I can !!

Uniform and related matters:

As September approaches, you (parents and carers) will probably be thinking about replacing items of uniform and equipment. Students may try to persuade you that uniform rules have changed.

Please be aware that there have been no changes for 2008-09. As you will know, the rule is that coats, bags and shoes must be plain black, and shoes must not be of a ‘trainer’ design. Hair should be neat and tidy, tied back when appropriate and should not reflect any style, which may offend or draws attention to the student. Any hair extension should match the natural  hair colour although we strongly discourage any fashionable hair styles of any sort. Our beleif, is that the academy is a place of work and not a fashion show. The academy reserves the right to send students home if not properly dressed in uniform or appearance in general (including hairstyle) is not consistent with the ethos of the academy.  Shaving patterns into hair styles is not acceptable.

PE kit:

Must be brought to all PE/Games lessons and must conform to the academy’s Kit lists. Students who do not bring kit will still do PE using spare kit provided by the academy. A charge will be made for washing the items. It is the policy of the academy that all students take appropriate physical exercise whether fit or not. Hackney has the one of the highest obesity levels in the UK and we believe that the academy must play its part in combating this and related health issues.

Colds and minor complaints are not acceptable reasons for non-participation in PE/Games. The final decision concerning the activity to be undertaken by students will be at the discretion of the PE teacher.

Mobile ‘phones and use of the academy telephone.
Mobile ‘phones are strictly forbidden. As it is known that Petchey students do not carry mobiles, there have been very few incidents on the way to and from the academy. Those who flout this rule will have their mobiles confiscated and returned only at the end of each Semester. The academy will not accept any responsibility for mobiles lost or stolen whether in our custody or otherwise. We will not waste valuable teachers' time searching for them if lost or stolen. Frequent spot checks will be made to ensure that mobiles and other forbidden materials are not brought into the academy. All students are expected to participate in spot checks as required.
Students may not use the academy Reception telephone unless in extreme emergency. Likewise, Reception will not take messages unless again in extreme emergency. At times Reception has been inundated with messages for students or alternatively requests from students to use the ‘phone. The academy is seeking to install a payphone using the academy student pass; however this will only be available at certain times of the day to prevent misuse.
Medicines.
There has been some uncertainty about the use of medicines and the academy’s response to dealing with medical issues.
The academy cannot in general administer any medicines and it cannot provide general remedies such as pain killers for period pains or all such similar needs. The Medical Room is reserved for serious emergency cases only and is not available for general ailments and complaints. Hay fever and similar prescriptions should be kept by students and administered by them  as and when required. A spare set may be kept by the Administrative Staff  for emergencies and should be clearly marked with the student's name. This is an essential part of learning to take responsibility for their own condition.

For other medical conditions, our staff will keep and administer prescribed drugs providing we have written permission and instructions from parents/carers. Invasive treatments can only be administered following a personal meeting and agreement between academy staff (usually the House Manager) and parents/carers resulting in a written agreement providing we have staff willing to undertake such actions. In the case of headaches and general feelings of discomfort, students are expected to remain in class, wherein educators will monitor progress and deal with the situation on a personal basis.

UPDATES:

This information will be updated every two week throughtout the Summer, hence it is important to check this message on a regular basis.

STAYING SAFE:

I hope that all our students (and Parents/Carers) have a very enjoyable summer vacation. Do encourage your child to read good books during the break but most importantly of all, please help them to stay safe. Always know with whom they are spending time and where they are.

Should something happen during the summer and you wish to contact someone in authority at the academy, please 'phone 0207 275 1500. There will always be someone in attendance during normal working hours (9am-4.pm). They will be able to contact the duty member of the Senior Management, who will return your call. Outside academy hours, you may call the Security Officer (24/7) on 07786704597 who will then relay a message to the senior member of staff on stand-by. Please make sure that you provide the Security Officer with the following information:

1.Your name

2.Your son/daughter's name

3.Their House Group and Year
