The Aim of our Curriculum

At The Petchey Academy we provide every student with the best possible quality of education, one that they enjoy, and that lays the foundation for a fulfilling and successful future. The core principles behind our curriculum, regardless of subject or key stage are:

  • The curriculum is content and knowledge rich. The learning objectives are specific, cumulative, well rounded, preparatory and rigorous.

  • The curriculum is standards-aligned. It is suitable for learners at different stages of their learning journey.

  • The curriculum supports effective, research based pedagogy such as formative assessment, feedback and metacognition.

Curriculum and Assessment Statement

All students have full access to the National Curriculum and they are given every opportunity to participate and progress in line with national expectations.

The Annual Review process for all students with SEND is planned and overseen.

Students’ individual needs are identified and monitored to ensure that appropriate provision can be made.

We plan an effective curriculum to meet the needs of students with special educational needs and ensure targets are SMART.

Our 16-19 Study Programmes

  • All of our students funded through the 16 to 19 funding methodology are enrolled on a study programme that combines qualifications and other activities and is tailored to each student’s prior attainment and career goals.

  • Our study programmes each have a core aim clearly identified in the individualised learner record and recorded in our census.

  • Our study programmes include work experience and non-qualification activities, which complement the other elements of the programme and support our students to progress to further or higher education (HE) or to employment.

  • Students are provided with additional English and maths learning time where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4

  • All students have work experience to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions

  • Other non-qualification activities to develop students’ character, broader skills, attitudes and confidence, and to support progression include:

    • All students have one hour per week of assembly/tutor time.

    • All students have one hour per week of taught PSHCE

  • Our study programmes are designed to be full-time with a minimum of 540 planned hours per academic year (but in reality will be on average 600 hours). This allows sufficient time to deliver the courses and additional hours.
